Drug intelligence / Profile preview
2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-sorbitol (18F-FDS) is a radiolabeled sorbitol analog used as a positron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent. It is specifically designed to visualize and differentiate infections caused by Enterobacterales (Gram-negative bacteria) and certain fungal pathogens (such as Aspergillus, Rhizopus, and Mucor) from sterile inflammation and cancer. 18F-FDS is selectively taken up and metabolized by these microorganisms via sorbitol-specific pathways, while showing minimal uptake in mammalian cells and Gram-positive bacteria. It is also utilized for functional renal imaging due to its rapid clearance through renal filtration. 18F-FDS can be synthesized via a simple, one-step reduction of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG).
